Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Okay, just being real here a moment… I stink at resting. It’s a lack of faith on my part, I know. My head knows God is sovereign, in charge of all, but I fall short on my resting/trusting at times. For years I found my rest/comfort in food, rather than Christ. At my biggest I weighed in about 330-340lbs. I got stressed, I ate. I had reason to celebrate, I ate. Joy = food, pain = food, stress = food – get the picture? Please hear me, that was sin, not only because of the gluttony, but the satisfaction I should have had in Christ I found in eating.
Pastor John Piper has built his ministry around a simple, but profound truth he came to from studying the life and ministry of Johnathan Edwards. God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. An awesome truth we’d all do well to live by. So very many things compete for the glory only God deserves – even good things – family, work, school and even church. The late Rich Mullins wrote “the stuff of earth competes for the allegiance I owe only to the Giver of all good things.”
That is why Jesus’ demand for us is so imperative. “The world is a hard place to enjoy Jesus above all.” (wJd pg. 45) but, we must.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
